The Island Endemics Foundation
Mission
Island Endemics is dedicated to conserving island biodiversity and is
committed to saving endemic species on islands.
Vision
Island Endemics was founded to conserve the species that are not high
profile.  Island species and the environments that support them are
fragile, susceptible to small environmental change.  We focus on
biological islands and those projects that we can be effective in real time.
Our history
The Island Endemics Foundation was founded in 1989 by Dr. Luis F.
Baptisita of the California Academy of Sciences.  Dr. Baptisita, a noted
ornithologist, had a life-long love of birds.  He was unique in that his
scientific work was informed by a deep practical knowledge of aviculture.
He had a particular interest in finches and doves.  He became aware of
the plight of the Socorro Dove in the 1980's in conversations with Dr. Jean
Delacour, a world renown ornithologist and aviculurist.  A trip to the
Revillagigedo Archipelago in 1988 inspired him to action, as he saw first
hand the effects of degradation on the island habitat that had been home
to the Socorro Dove.  His advocacy to the Mexican Government aided in
the declaration of the Revillagigedo Archipelago as a Biosphere Reserve
in 1994. His driving vision was to repatriate the Socorro Dove to the its
ancestral island home on Socorro Island.  Intertwined with this passion,
was a long scientific association with Mexico of Dr. Baptista's and the
California Academy of Sciences.
Our organization
The Island Endemics Foundation was incorporated as a 501 (c) 3
nonprofit tax-exempt organization in the State of California in 1989.  As a
public benefit corporation, we are able to accept tax deductible donations
from the public to support our work to conserve endemics species
worldwide.
